Owerri, the capital of Imo State, was deserted on Thursday as residents obeyed the sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) to commemorate Biafra Day.
Despite the Imo State Police Command’s statement urging residents to disregard the IPOB order, the streets were empty, and economic activities were at a standstill.
Markets, schools, motor parks, filling stations, and commercial banks were all closed, with a 90% compliance rate.
Major roads, including Owerri/Umuahia Road, Owerri/Onitsha Road, and Owerri/Port Harcourt Road, were empty, with no movement of private or commercial vehicles.
Hotels, eateries, shops, and business centers were also closed, with residents staying at home for fear of being attacked or harassed.
Primary schools were under lock and key, except for secondary school students taking their WAEC exams, who were seen rushing to their schools as early as 6:30 am.
Travelers were stranded, with few commercial vehicles on the roads, and a security helicopter was seen hovering in the air.
The popular Whethdral Road in Owerri was deserted, with no signs of life or activity.
The IPOB’s sit-at-home order was widely obeyed, with residents choosing to stay at home rather than risk any potential consequences.
