The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has been postponed by six months and will now take place in January 2026 in Morocco.
The tournament was originally scheduled for June 2025 but has been delayed due to a scheduling conflict with the expanded 32-team Club World Cup.
The Club World Cup is set to be played in the United States from June 15 to July 13, 2025, and the African Football Confederation (CAF) has decided to reschedule AFCON to avoid a clash between the two tournaments.
CAF’s general secretary, Veron Mosengo-Omba, confirmed the new dates in an interview with BBC, citing concerns over player welfare and the feasibility of players participating in both tournaments consecutively.
Mosengo-Omba emphasized the need to prioritize player interests and balance different aspects, including discussions with partners, to finalize the dates. He acknowledged that scheduling is a challenge for all parties involved.
According to him, the decision to reschedule AFCON 2025 comes as a result of careful consideration and consultation with stakeholders.
He noted that the new dates will ensure that players can participate in both tournaments without excessive strain and fatigue.
The AFCON 2025 is expected to be a highly anticipated event, with top African teams vying for the coveted title. The tournament’s postponement will give teams and players more time to prepare and ensure a high-quality competition.
