The Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Imo State has warned the public to steer clear of a purported Annual Political Conference scheduled to hold on Friday, September 5, 2025, at Venassa Hotel, Owerri.

In a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary, Sir Don Ubah, and made available to journalists in Owerri on Thursday, the party stressed that the conference was not endorsed by the Acting National Chairman of the SDP, Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe.
“We have been informed of a purported ‘Annual Political Conference Summit’ taking place in Owerri, the Imo State capital, by a group of persons claiming to be members of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). It has become pertinent that we clarify this to avoid deceiving the public. These are disgruntled elements out to cause chaos in the state,” the statement read.
The release reaffirmed the authentic leadership of the party.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Acting National Chairman of our great party, SDP, is Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar Gombe, while the Imo State Chairman is Engr. Augustine Okere. The Social Democratic Party under Engr. Augustine Okere is intact and cannot tolerate any act that is capable of bringing disrepute to the party.”
The party described the planned conference as an illegal gathering orchestrated by impostors.
“The public is advised to stay away from the said conference as it was not sanctioned by the party, but by impostors being sponsored to destabilize the party,” it warned.
According to the statement, security agencies have already been notified to stop the event.
“Furthermore, we have engaged the police to make sure that the event is called off to avoid any breakdown of law and order, just as we call on the people of Imo State to be guided accordingly,” the release concluded.
