The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday directed the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) to constitute a team of medical experts to evaluate the health condition of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
In a ruling delivered by Justice James Omotosho, the court ordered that the medical team submit its report within eight days.
The judge held that the report would guide the court in determining an application filed by Kanu, who is facing a seven-count terrorism charge, seeking to be transferred to the National Hospital in Abuja for proper medical treatment.
Justice Omotosho further directed the medical team to inspect the medical facility of the Department of State Services (DSS) to verify whether it has the capacity to meet Kanu’s health needs.
The court also ruled that the committee to be constituted by the NMA is at liberty to use any hospital in the country to conduct its investigations.
According to the court, the committee should be made up of between eight and ten members of the NMA and must include a cardiologist and a neurologist.
Also, the court ordered that the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital in Abuja must be part of the committee.
