President Bola Tinubu has directed all political appointees under his administration seeking elective offices in the 2027 general election to resign on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive was conveyed in a statement issued by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), citing compliance with the Electoral Act and the timetable released for party primaries.
According to the statement, the order is anchored on Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as guidelines issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the next electoral cycle.
The circular, signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and issued through the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, outlines the categories of officials affected by the directive.
Those required to resign include ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior special assistants, special assistants, and personal assistants to the president.
Also affected are directors-general and chief executive officers of federal government parastatals, agencies, commissions, and government-owned companies.
The directive further extends to all other political appointees serving under the president who intend to participate in party primaries or seek nomination for any elective position.
Affected officials have been instructed to submit their resignation letters through the Office of the SGF not later than the March 31 deadline.
Tinubu said the move is aimed at ensuring strict adherence to electoral laws, enhancing transparency, and guaranteeing a level playing field for all aspirants.
He reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and promoting credible electoral processes across the country.
