Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, says he has begun consultations with leaders of the National Democratic Congress, NDC, Peoples Redemption Party and others as uncertainty deepens within the African Democratic Congress.
Mr Kwankwaso disclosed this on Saturday night in a statement while denying reports that he had already concluded plans to dump the ADC, insisting no final decision had been taken on his political future or that of his associates.
The former presidential candidate said ongoing consultations were necessary because of what he described as mounting legal and structural troubles threatening the stability of the ADC.
According to him, the recent judgment of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, which affirmed the legitimacy of the David Mark-led National Working Committee, also returned parts of the dispute to the High Court, leaving unresolved issues hanging over the party.
He added that a Federal High Court had also ruled against the party’s convention, while the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation had sought the deregistration of the ADC.
Mr Kwankwaso said the unfolding turmoil bore resemblance to the crisis that pushed his camp out of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, which he said became difficult to remain in because of externally induced legal battles.
He said discussions with leaders of the NDC, PRP and other groups were aimed at determining the most viable political direction ahead of the 2027 general election.
The former senator added that a formal position would be announced after the consultations are concluded.
On growing speculation over the 2027 presidential race, Mr Kwankwaso said he had neither declared interest nor endorsed any aspirant, stressing that the ADC had yet to zone its presidential ticket or settle on a candidate.
He also dismissed insinuations over his absence from two recent ADC stakeholders’ meetings, saying party leaders had been informed in advance that personal commitments would prevent his attendance.
