In a commendation letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, United States President Donald Trump has praised his Nigerian counterpart’s “decisive leadership” and pledged continued American support for Nigeria’s efforts to combat terrorism and protect vulnerable communities.

Trump said he appreciated Tinubu’s leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people, particularly his efforts to tackle the security challenges confronting the country.

“I appreciate your decisive leadership on behalf of the Nigerian people. I applaud your resolve to tackle the issues plaguing your nation, especially the violence affecting Christian communities,” Trump said in the letter.

The US president said it was an honour to stand with Tinubu and Nigeria in the fight against terrorists, expressing his desire to see the country become stronger and more prosperous.

Trump described the relationship between the United States and Nigeria as crucial at a time when conflict has spread across West Africa and other parts of the world.

He said both countries shared the common goal of confronting terrorism in all its forms, adding that the “historic US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap” had established a robust framework for achieving the objective.

Trump also disclosed that he had deployed United States Special Operations Forces to support the Nigerian military, describing them as among the most elite military units anywhere in the world.

According to him, the American forces would provide Nigerian troops with the skills, tools and intelligence needed to protect the country and ensure the safety and security of its citizens, particularly those of faith who have come under attack.

“I look forward to our continued discussions over the course of my Presidency,” Trump said, signalling his intention to maintain close engagement with Tinubu as the two countries deepen their defence and security cooperation.
