Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has kicked off the process of determining his successor, signalling the beginning of a fresh phase in the political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Uzodimma disclosed his succession plan on Wednesday during a meeting with members of the Imo Elders Council and the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers at the Imo State Executive Council Chamber, Government House, Owerri.
The governor’s move is expected to intensify political consultations within the All Progressives Congress (APC), with attention now shifting to the identity of the politician he may eventually back to succeed him as governor of the state.
What remains unclear, however, is whether the person Uzodimma eventually chooses as the APC governorship candidate will also be the individual expected to serve as acting governor should he leave office before the expiration of his tenure.
Although Uzodimma is constitutionally entitled to remain in office until January 2028, having assumed office in January 2020 and secured re-election in 2023, his political ambition has introduced a new dimension to the succession question. The governor is the APC candidate for the Imo West Senatorial District election and could move to the National Assembly if he wins.
INNONEWS had reported months ago that the governor was likely to name a new deputy governor, who could subsequently be elevated to acting governor after being screened and cleared by the Imo State House of Assembly, should Uzodimma vacate office to take up a senatorial mandate.
The possibility has added another dimension to the succession debate, particularly as the person who emerges as Uzodimma’s preferred governorship candidate may not necessarily be the same person who would temporarily occupy Government House as acting governor.
As leader of the APC in Imo, Uzodimma is expected to wield considerable influence over the process leading to the emergence of the party’s 2027 governorship candidate. His endorsement could give a significant advantage to any aspirant he chooses to support, given his influence over the party structure and key stakeholders.
The succession process is also unfolding against the backdrop of the Imo Charter of Equity, which advocates rotation of the governorship among the state’s three senatorial zones.
“The Charter of Equity is real, and I need your mandate to implement it because that is what will bring lasting peace to Imo State,” he said at the meeting.
The governor maintained that the next governor of Imo State must emerge in line with the Charter of Equity and possess the character, integrity and commitment required to preserve the gains recorded by his administration.
He stressed that whoever succeeds him must be God-fearing, fair-minded and committed to sustaining the principles of equity, justice and good governance rather than reversing the progress already achieved.
With Orlu zone currently occupying the Government House, expectations remain strong among stakeholders that the next governor should emerge from Owerri zone. The unfolding political process will therefore determine not only who succeeds Uzodimma but also how the transition is managed if the governor eventually leaves office before the end of his constitutional tenure.
