Media relations consultant, Chief Dr. Fidel Onyeneke, has cautioned Nigerian journalists against unprofessional conduct and provocative reporting capable of heightening tensions and undermining the 2027 general elections.
Onyeneke, in a statement issued in Owerri on Friday, said the sensitivity of the forthcoming elections required journalists to demonstrate patriotism, sound professional judgment and responsibility in the discharge of their duties.
He expressed concern over the tendency of some individuals to abuse the media by making unguarded and inflammatory statements, warning that such utterances could create confusion and contribute to political violence.
According to him, the media must remain neutral and serve as a credible watchdog of society, rather than become an avenue for advancing personal interests or deepening political divisions.
Onyeneke particularly urged journalists to guard against allowing personal opinions and political biases to influence their reports, stressing that professional journalism requires fairness, balance and commitment to the public interest.
He called for increased training and capacity-building for media practitioners ahead of the 2027 elections, saying better preparation would help journalists handle sensitive electoral issues professionally and reduce friction with political actors, security agencies and other stakeholders.
He also appealed for improved remuneration and welfare packages for journalists, arguing that better working conditions would strengthen their ability to perform their responsibilities effectively and independently.
Onyeneke reminded journalists of their broader responsibility to promote peace, security, social integration and national development through responsible reporting.
He urged them to carry out their assignments with courage and diligence while keeping the interests of the masses at the centre of their professional responsibilities.
The media consultant said journalists must recognise the potential impact of their reports during the election season and use their platforms to strengthen democratic participation rather than aggravate existing tensions.
