COMMUNIQUÉ ISSUED AT THE END OF THE SOUTH-EAST ZONE WORKING COMMITTEE MEETING OF THE PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY WITH THE THREE (3) GUBERNATORIAL CANDIDATES OF THE PARTY FROM THE ZONE FOR THE 2027 ELECTIONS, HELD IN ENUGU IN SEPTEMBER 2026
After extensive deliberations on the state of the party in the zone and the political atmosphere in the South-East, particularly with regard to security, electoral chances at the polls, party readiness and the neutrality of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), among other issues, the South-East Zonal Working Committee and the three (3) gubernatorial candidates arrived at the following resolutions:
The South-East Zonal Working Committee, together with the three (3) gubernatorial candidates, thanked our National Party Leader, Chief Barrister Nyesom Wike, for his dynamic leadership, which has uplifted the image and ranking of the party as the only organised opposition party with a clear direction and harmony, which is unprecedented.
NATIONAL WORKING COMMITTEE
The committee carefully appraised the workings of the current National Working Committee and congratulated the National Chairman, Alhaji Abdulrahman Mohammed, the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu, and the entire NWC on the successful organisation of a completely litigation-free screening exercise and conduct of primaries, which produced candidates with integrity, proven records of experience and achievements in their respective fields of endeavour.
The committee noted that this feat was by no means an easy one.
SECURITY
The committee viewed with great concern the constant deterioration of a secure environment for opposition parties in some states in the South-East Zone, with particular reference to Ebonyi and Enugu States, where there have been visible violent attacks on opposition party members.
The committee expressed concern over what it described as the continuous use of primitive language of “attack, consume and destroy” the opposition, which it said has been credited to the Governor of Ebonyi State. The committee described such language, particularly in the 21st Century and on the eve of the 2026/2027 general elections, as unimaginable from an individual who took an oath of office to protect the people of Ebonyi State.
The committee also took a retrospective view of the bye-election which recently took place in Enugu State, where, according to the committee, massive thuggery and violence were the order of the day.
The committee concluded that Saturday, June 20, 2026, in Enugu State, could best be described as a “day of guns and knives”, which it alleged was clearly orchestrated by the incumbent government of Enugu State.
ELECTORAL CHANCES OF THE PARTY IN THE SOUTH-EAST
After a realistic appraisal of the chances of the party in the South-East Zone, the Zonal Working Committee and the three (3) gubernatorial candidates came to the following conclusions:
a) The Peoples Democratic Party remains an organic party with huge representation in almost every family across the South-East Zone.
b) The abysmal non-performance of the Ebonyi State Government and what the committee described as an elitist approach to governance, coupled with unprecedented high double taxation imposed on the masses and downtrodden people of Enugu State, have, in the committee’s view, made the two governors unelectable in a level playing field on election day.
c) The high debt burden of Abia State and what the committee described as the total neglect of rural areas, pensioners and civil servants, as well as the lowest minimum wage in the South-East, in place of what it called media optics, makes Abia State a “surprise waiting to happen” at the polls.
The committee concluded that the party’s chances in the 2027 elections could be described as a “low-hanging fruit” that only requires a strategic stretching out of hands.
DEMANDS
INEC
The South-East Zonal Working Committee, in conjunction with the three (3) gubernatorial candidates of the party, earnestly calls for a neutral INEC and a level playing field for all political parties to test their acceptance among the electorate in the 2027 elections.
SECURITY
The committee seriously implores the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Director-General of the Department of State Services, all security agencies and, indeed, the Inspector-General of Police to show special interest in the activities of security agencies in the South-East.
The committee also calls for a review of the activities of the Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State, who, despite several petitions by opposition parties, has allegedly chosen not to be proactive and has acted in a manner that, according to the committee, leaves much to be desired of a professional.
CONCLUSION
The Peoples Democratic Party in the South-East Zone is poised for the 2027 general elections and encourages all its members to remain steadfast and hopeful, as, God willing, the party will come out in flying colours.
