Peter Obi, 2027 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Anambra State Governor, has urged Nigerian editors to scrutinise politicians, investigate their records and expose wrongdoing ahead of future elections.
Obi made the call on Friday at the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, held in Enugu State, with the theme, “The Ballot, The Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive.”
He said editors had a responsibility to serve as “bulwarks protecting our democracy” by using their privileged position to hold politicians accountable and demand excellence from those seeking public office. “Editors must continue to scrutinise the qualifications and past records of those seeking public office, expose past wrongdoings and ensure that the Nigerian people have access to the information they need to make informed decisions,” he said.
Obi also urged the media to ensure that political leaders exemplify the best values of society, stressing the importance of examining the records and conduct of candidates before entrusting them with public responsibilities.
The former governor also participated in a question-and-answer session at the conference, where he interacted with participants and listened to their perspectives on the state of Nigeria’s democracy and the role of the media in strengthening it. He thanked the Nigerian Guild of Editors for the invitation and wished the conference success.
