The Chairman of the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) in Imo State, Evangelist Dr Bethran Uzodimma, has pledged the committee’s support for the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu’s Safe Schools Initiative.
Mr Uzodimma made the commitment on Wednesday during a PCRC sensitisation visit to City Secondary School, Owerri, where he said the committee would work with security agencies and other stakeholders to strengthen safety in schools. He said the PCRC would also support measures such as the provision of appropriate traffic signs around schools to protect students.
The initiative, according to the police, is aimed at ensuring that schools provide safe and conducive environments for learning. Representing Mr Disu at the event, the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, commended the PCRC for supporting the programme and urged students to reject cultism, drug abuse, crime and other social vices.
Mr Okoye also advised the students to respect their teachers, obey the law and remain committed to their education and good character. The PCRC state coordinator, Okenze Maurice Ekeh, said the committee would work with schools, parent-teacher associations, government agencies and other stakeholders to identify security concerns and provide relevant information to the police.
The PCRC national chairman, Alhaji Magaji Ibraheem Olaniyan, also commended the initiative and pledged the committee’s continued support. Representatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps, National Union of Road Transport Workers and other agencies at the event similarly promised to support the Safe Schools Initiative, including through traffic-safety and civic education for students.
