Chief Hyacinth Umunakwe Nwachukwu, a chieftain of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has urged Nigerians to reject politicians of questionable character in the 2027 general election, describing Peter Obi as the most credible candidate to lead the country. Nwachukwu, who is President of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia chapter, made the call while interacting with journalists at his country home in Umuhu Okwuato, Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State.

He said his involvement in politics was driven by his desire to see Obi emerge as president, citing his integrity, track record and capacity to revive the economy. According to him, Obi stands out for his reliance on verifiable statistics and clear explanations when addressing national issues.

“My fear is that, with the magnitude of suffering in the country, some people now feel they can win by rigging. That is why some of us are guarding against it,” he said, adding that he was mobilising grassroots support through moral persuasion and financial assistance to discourage voters from supporting corrupt politicians.

Nwachukwu, an energy management and policy analyst, nuclear medicine technologist, philanthropist and author, also expressed confidence in the NDC’s candidates, describing them as credible alternatives capable of delivering better governance. Although he is not contesting any elective position, he said his empowerment initiative had provided ₦150,000 each to more than 20 youths, alongside contributions to rural road grading, electrification, community hall projects and cultural promotion in his area.

He urged young people not to lose hope despite the country’s challenges, stressing that diligence, perseverance, persistence, discipline and enthusiasm were essential to achieving success.
