President Bola Tinubu has accused his political opponents of creating the hunger and poverty they now criticise his administration over, insisting that his government is working to eradicate the problems. Tinubu spoke on Saturday in Kaduna during the flag-off of the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2027 presidential campaign, where he defended his economic reforms and urged Nigerians to support his re-election bid.

“My opponents talk about hunger and poverty. They created these problems. We are the ones working to eradicate them,” the president said. He maintained that his administration had tackled what he described as a subsidy racket, fraudulent invoices and fuel smuggling, insisting that there would be no return to the previous system. According to him, his government confronted inherited economic challenges with courage and political will and is building an economy that rewards hard work and creates opportunities for Nigerians.

Tinubu acknowledged the hardship Nigerians have endured, assuring citizens that their sacrifices would not be in vain. He said he would continue working until the gains of his administration’s policies were reflected in households, businesses and people’s pockets. The president also praised APC governors for executing road, hospital, school and market projects across their states, attributing their increased revenues and ability to pay salaries regularly to the federal government’s economic reforms.

Calling on Nigerians to vote for him and Vice President Kashim Shettima on January 16, 2027, Tinubu urged eligible voters to come out with their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and renew the pair’s mandate. He thanked Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani for hosting the campaign flag-off and expressed appreciation to supporters who gathered from different parts of northern Nigeria. The president said the election would give Nigerians an opportunity to determine the country’s future through their votes.
