The ban on use of motorcycles (Okada) in Owerri metropolis , Imo State capital is still in force.
The State Police Command said it has observed with utmost dismay the reappearance of motorcycle operators in Owerri metropolis.
According to a statement by DSP Andrew Enwerem, Police Public Relations Officer, Imo State Police Command, Owerri, he recalled that the Imo State Government in 2011 banned the use of motorcycles within the Owerri metropolis in line with the provisions of the Imo State of Nigeria, Law No. 17 of 2000, Part V, No. 12, (2) (a) following their involvement in nefarious activities.
The statement reads:
“The State Police command wishes to alert members of the public to be mindful of these motorcycle operators and their concomitant criminal activities within their vicinity which has not only posed danger but a serious challenge to the efforts of the police in the fight against crime and criminality in Owerri metropolis.
“Motorcycle operators and the general public are by this press release warned that the ban is still in force and the Command has embarked on strategic operations to arrest, confiscate and prosecute offenders who violate the order, accordingly.
“The general public is also advised to notify the police of criminal activities in their areas through the Command Control Room/ Distress call numbers 08034773600 or 08098880197 for necessary action.
