Okigwe zone is replete with abandoned projects. This is the grouse of Okigwe Dynamic Movement, ODM, a powerful interest group championing the cause of Okigwe zone in Imo State.
The group while lamenting the high rate of abandoned projects in the zone enveloped in a Memorandum Of Okigwe Interest it issued to the Imo State governmnet, expressed worry that most cluster of government projects in Okigwe have a common feature in the sense that none of them is yet completed after six years down the line.
The group listed the abandoned projects to include: Okigwe Township Stadium, Princess Hotel Project, Dualization of Owerri road,Okigwe, Okigwe Shopping Mall at the former township park, Cultural Centre at the pottery centre, General Hospital at Aboh Umulolo, NTA Channel 27 Okigwe, unsupervised grading of community roads during the last quater of the year 2016 and blank urban renewal.
ODM expressed concern that “there is hardly any of them that has reached 40% completion. Some of them have rather become veritable hideouts for criminals and urban gangsters. The same cannot be said of Owerri and Orlu with networks of urban roads, conference centres, well maintained stadia, reasonably funded tertiary institutions, modern markets”
The Movement said it has watched the trend of governance of Imo State and have kept abiding faith with the Federal Republic of Nigeria and also believes in the tripod structure of the States where three senatorial zones constitute the plank of each state.
ODM recalled how the present government in Imo State was received with fanfare in 2011as a necessary replacement of the previous regime which was considered most lacking in terms of vision and approach to the challenges of modern governance.
It stated that “six years along the line, it is up to the good people of Imo State to sit back and reappraise that decision which brought about the kind of change and rescue they now experience”
ODM said it is deeply concerned with the lopsided application of state resources and priviledges in virtually all facets of state development, the recent one which is urban renewal, a programme which is designed to give life to existing infrastructure as well as expand the frontiers of social and economic activities through socio economic layouts, robust transportaion, healthcare, education, road expansion and networking.
“No doubt, and in fairness to the government, this government appears to be given impetus in Owerri and Orlu senatorial zones in complete exclusion of Okigwe, the oldest and indeed the most strategic of the tripod zones of the state” ODM stated
