The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has granted Nigeria three points and three goals following an abandoned Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying game against Libya.
The October 15 match in Benghazi took a chaotic turn, with Nigeria’s national team, the Super Eagles, facing significant logistical issues on Libyan soil.
CAF’s decision comes after a detailed investigation by its Disciplinary Board.
The Super Eagles had to endure nearly a day at an abandoned airport, left stranded without sufficient support from the Libyan authorities.
Citing their treatment as intolerable, Nigeria ultimately decided to withdraw from the game.
The incident sparked widespread condemnation.
The CAF Disciplinary Board subsequently opened a probe into the incident to assess responsibility.
In its findings, CAF identified Libya as falling short on multiple counts of its organizational responsibilities.
The board noted that the Libya Football Federation violated Article 31 of the AFCON Regulations, which clearly outlines the standards expected from host nations.
CAF further cited breaches of Articles 82 and 151 of its Disciplinary Code, underscoring the severity of Libya’s non-compliance and the host nation’s accountability for ensuring a fair playing environment.
