A political analyst in Imo State, Mr. Dominic Ekwebelem, has warned that any aspirant from Orlu zone contesting for the governorship in 2027 would be playing the devil’s advocate.
Speaking to INNONEWS in Owerri, Ekwebelem described such a move as a direct affront to fairness and equity, arguing that it would stir unnecessary political tension and confusion in the state.
“It is not about the constitutional right of an Orlu son to contest; it’s about fairness and the principles of equity. After 24 uninterrupted years of Orlu dominance of the state’s governorship by the time Uzodimma completes his tenure, the mood of the people of Imo State is resolutely against another governor emerging from the zone,” Ekwebelem stated.
Ekwebelem highlighted the historical trajectory of governance in Imo State, where Orlu zone has produced three governors since 1999: Achike Udenwa (1999–2007), Rochas Okorocha (2011–2019), and the incumbent, Hope Uzodimma, who would complete his eight-year tenure by 2027.
He argued that this cumulative 24-year reign from one zone has created a glaring imbalance that must be addressed to maintain the state’s political harmony.
He called on core leaders of the Orlu zone to dissuade their sons from contesting for Imo governorship in 2027.
“The leaders of Orlu must not be economical with the truth. They should rise to the occasion and caution any aspirant from the zone who intends to run for governor in 2027. It is time for Orlu Zone to embrace equity and support another zone to produce the next governor,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of aligning with the Charter of Equity, a political agreement designed to ensure equitable power rotation among the three zones of the state.
Although the Imo State government has dismissed the Charter as lacking legal backing, Ekwebelem said he aligns with those who say it is a “Doctrine of Necessity” in addressing the state’s political imbalance.
“The Charter of Equity may not have the force of law, but it is a critical working document. In a state like Imo, where there has been prolonged political imbalance especially when it comes to Imo governorship , it becomes an essential tool to restore fairness and stability,” he said.
He further urged Governor Hope Uzodimma to lead by example by endorsing a candidate from another zone as his successor.
“Governor Uzodimma must use his influence to unite the state by supporting a candidate from outside Orlu. This will not only cement his legacy but also promote lasting peace and equity in Imo,” he added.
Ekwebelem particularly acknowledged Owerri zone’s legitimate claim to the governorship.
“Owerri zone has every reason to demand its turn at the helm of affairs. They have been sidelined for far too long, so, they have the right to agitate ” he said.
