The Imo State Police Command has clarified false reports of an alleged abduction involving fifteen students of Eminent Scholars Imperial Academy, Onitsha, Anambra State.
According to a statement by Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, the students were en route to Okigwe for their rescheduled JAMB examination when their bus broke down.
The incident occurred on May 16, 2025, as the students traveled back to Onitsha after completing their examination.
According to the statement, the breakdown happened in the Amuro area of Okigwe, known for its poor mobile network coverage, creating communication challenges.
“This mechanical failure caused unnecessary panic and speculation,”
“We want to reassure the public that no abduction occurred, and all students remained safe throughout the ordeal.”DSP Okoye stated in the release.
According to him, Upon receiving the report, the Imo State Police Command in collaboration with sister security agencies, swiftly launched a coordinated patrol.
“The stranded group was located and safely escorted to Owerri for further assistance.
“In Owerri, the police arranged for the broken bus to be repaired, ensuring the students could continue their journey without delay. By May 17, 2025, the students and their proprietor safely returned to Onitsha, unharmed and in good spirits”part of the statement read.
The Police Public Relations Officer commended the public for their vigilance but cautioned against spreading unverified information.
“We value the concern of citizens but urge everyone to confirm facts before sharing to avoid unnecessary alarm,” he advised.
DSP Okoye emphasized the police’s dedication to public safety and swift response during emergencies.
“Our actions demonstrate our commitment to protecting the lives of everyone in Imo State,” he concluded.
