As political permutations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Imo Advocacy for Good Governance (IMAGG) has declared unwavering support for the emergence of a governor from Owerri Zone. The group insists the time has come for political power to shift in the spirit of fairness and equity.
The group’s resolution was the key takeaway from its stakeholders’ meeting held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Rockview Hotel, Owerri. The meeting brought together IMAGG’s leadership, including its Director-General, Ambassador Isaac Chigozie Udeh; State Women Leader, Lady Dr. Sophia Orji; zonal and state officials, as well as local government coordinators.
Ambassador Udeh, in his address, underscored the need to break the long-standing political dominance of other zones and pave the way for a more inclusive and equitable governance structure.
“We have adopted a unique, grassroots-based mobilization formula. Our strategy includes the formation of booth-level units with two men and two women assigned to safeguard votes on election day. ”Udeh declared
He stressed that IMAGG is fully grounded in all 305 political wards across Imo State and is now embarking on a deliberate search for a God-fearing candidate from Owerri Zone.
Udeh further pointed out that since 1999, Owerri Zone has consistently supported governorship candidates from Orlu and Okigwe Zones. “We are calling on our brothers from those zones to reciprocate the gesture in 2027. Equity demands nothing less,” he added.
In a message delivered on behalf of IMAGG’s National Leader, Chief Osita Opara, former Imo State Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Barr. Udo Agoha, echoed similar sentiments.
“Owerri Zone is home to numerous qualified, God-fearing, and development-driven individuals who have the capacity to lead Imo State, restore its lost glory, and address its socioeconomic and infrastructural challenges,” Agoha stated.
He charged political stakeholders from Okigwe and Orlu to throw their weight behind Owerri Zone for the sake of justice and sustainable development.
“We are not just here to express our commitment to the 2027 governorship project; we are here to declare our readiness to vote and protect our votes. The IMAGG organization is solidly behind Chief Osita Opara, and we believe the time has come for Owerri to lead,” Agoha affirmed.
Also speaking, Lady Dr. Sophia Orji unveiled plans for the IMAGG Women Summit scheduled for August 30, 2025. According to her, the summit will assemble at least 10 women delegates from each of the 27 local government areas, a move she said would deepen female participation in the political process.
