Former Super Eagles forward, Victor Ikpeba has lavished praise on head coach. Eric Chelle, describing his short stint in charge as “transformative” following Nigeria’s resurgence in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Chelle, who took over from Finidi George earlier this year, inherited a struggling team sitting third in their qualifying group and in danger of missing out on the World Cup play-offs. But a commanding 4–0 victory over Benin Republic lifted the Eagles to second place, securing a vital spot in the next phase.
Speaking on the team’s revival, Ikpeba said the Malian tactician had brought discipline, balance, and belief back to the squad. “This manager, Eric Chelle, has done a great job — four wins and two draws from six games. He has changed a lot in this team in a very short time. Not many believed in him when he arrived, but he has proved himself.” Ikpeba said.
The former Monaco star added that Chelle’s steady start had restored optimism to Nigerian football fans, noting that consistency is key in long qualification campaigns.
“A strong start makes a big difference,” he said, referencing how other African sides like South Africa benefited from early momentum.
Chelle’s tenure has seen bold decisions, including dropping senior defender William Troost-Ekong from some key games and reshuffling his starting lineup, moves that appear to have revitalized the team’s energy and competitiveness.
Nigeria are now expected to face Gabon in the World Cup play-off semi-finals in November, with a potential path to the intercontinental play-offs at stake — a stage that could determine whether Chelle’s impressive turnaround ends with a World Cup ticket.
