Former France international Patrick Vieira has been appointed the new head coach of the Senegal national team, the Senegalese Football Federation announced on Tuesday.

Vieira, who was born in Dakar, succeeds Pape Thiaw, who left the post after Senegal’s disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The appointment marks Vieira’s first job as a national team coach.

The 50-year-old has previously managed Crystal Palace, Nice, Strasbourg and Genoa, as well as Manchester City’s youth team and New York City FC. He was also a key member of France’s 1998 World Cup-winning and Euro 2000-winning sides.

Vieira is expected to begin work during the next international window as Senegal prepares for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with qualifiers scheduled to begin in September.
