The Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) is set to host the 2nd International Conference on Procurement, Environmental and Social Standards (ICPES 2025), a high-level global academic and policy forum scheduled for November 18–21, 2025. The conference, themed “Achieving Sustainable and Resilient Livelihoods in the Face of Climate Change,” is expected to bring together a wide mix of scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and industry leaders.
Organised by the FUTO Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Procurement, Environmental, and Social Standards (CE-sPESS), in collaboration with the School of Environmental Sciences (SOES) and the Directorate of General Studies (DGS), this year’s edition aims to deepen conversations around sustainable procurement and the growing threats posed by climate change. The conference will also examine the social and environmental standards needed to safeguard vulnerable communities.
One of the major highlights of the event is the announcement of Prof. Protus Nathan Uzoma, a respected Nigerian academic, public intellectual, and Professor of Philosophy of Religion at the University of Uyo (agdsn), as a Distinguished Guest Speaker. His appearance has generated significant excitement within academic circles, given his long-standing contributions to national discourse and his reputation as a fearless social critic.
Prof. Uzoma, who has addressed global audiences and authored more than 30 scholarly works, is also known for his wide engagements with philosophical, religious, and social issues. Organisers say his keynote intervention will set the tone for deeper reflections on how philosophical frameworks can guide sustainable development and climate resilience.
The conference will also feature notable speakers such as FUTO Vice-Chancellor, Professor N. N. Oti, who is widely regarded for her commitment to innovation, scientific excellence, and knowledge-driven development. Her leadership of the host institution is expected to enrich the engagement and elevate the quality of discussions.
Another key participant is Professor Paul Ogugua of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, an accomplished scholar with expertise spanning philosophy, marketing, public administration, and law. Dr. Adebowale Abraham Adedokun, Director-General of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP), is also billed to speak, bringing decades of experience in Nigeria’s procurement reforms and public sector transparency.
The four-day event will feature paper presentations, interactive workshops, exhibitions, and panel discussions aimed at generating actionable solutions. CE-sPESS notes that the gathering will provide a crucial platform for sharing new research, policy insights, and innovations needed to address escalating environmental and social challenges.
Registration has already opened for both local and international participants, with flexible categories for students and professionals. Attendees will receive conference materials, certificates, lunch, and unrestricted access to all sessions at the Gender Building, FUTO, the designated venue.
