The Imo State House of Assembly has approved the 2026 budget of N1.43 trillion just 24 hours after Governor Hope Uzodimma presented it to lawmakers. The swift passage has drawn attention to the state legislature’s accelerated consideration of the executive’s financial blueprint.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the budget bill was introduced on Monday and immediately placed before the Committee of the Whole, enabling lawmakers to deliberate and pass it within a single day.
Majority Leader Kanayo Onyemaechi described the budget as “people-oriented,” noting that it is designed to fund projects that will drive socio-economic development across the state. He stressed that the allocation would enhance infrastructure and improve public services.
Chisom Ojukwu, representing Nkwerre State Constituency, commended the governor, saying the budget reflected Uzodimma’s “courage and leadership qualities.” He urged colleagues to support the proposal to ensure rapid implementation of development initiatives.
Following contributions from other members, the House Speaker, Chike Olemgbe, moved for a vote. The budget was passed unanimously, signalling strong legislative backing for the governor’s fiscal plan.
Olemgbe directed the Clerk of the Assembly, Chinelo Emeghara, to prepare a clean copy of the bill for the governor’s assent, the final step before the budget can be executed.
The 2026 budget allocates N238.499 billion to recurrent expenditure while earmarking around N1.22 trillion for capital projects. The capital component is expected to cover infrastructure, healthcare, education, and other critical sectors.
NAN did not report whether the House made any modifications to the governor’s proposal or approved it as presented, leaving open questions about the level of legislative scrutiny applied.
