Orluzurumee, the apex socio-cultural organisation in Imo’s Orlu senatorial Zone, has asked political parties preparing for future elections in the state to subject all aspirants from the zone to strict screening processes before granting them tickets for elective offices.
In a statement it said it circulated to political parties across Imo State, the group said it was worried about the calibre of individuals seeking public offices from Orlu Zone, insisting that competence, integrity and credibility must remain central in the selection of candidates.
The statement, signed by Nnamdi Cos-Ukwuoma, publicity secretary of the group stressed that although the organisation remains non-partisan and does not interfere in the internal affairs of political parties, it could not remain silent over issues capable of affecting the future and reputation of Orlu people.
“Political parties must subject all aspirants to comprehensive background checks, rigorous screening procedures, and extensive due diligence before granting nominations or endorsements,” the organisation stated.
Orluzurumee warned that the emergence of persons with “questionable records” could damage the collective image and integrity of the zone, noting that public office should not be handed to individuals lacking proven character and leadership capacity.
“Without prejudice, we warn against the emergence of individuals whose past conduct, public disposition, personal history, or questionable records could undermine the integrity, image and collective dignity of Orlu Zone,” the statement added.
The organisation further declared that leadership positions should only be occupied by persons with “proven integrity, unquestionable character, sound judgment and demonstrable leadership capacity.”
According to the group, the development and aspirations of Orlu Zone are closely linked to the quality of representation produced at different levels of government, including the state and federal legislatures.
It urged political parties to widen consultations before finalising candidates for elective positions, advising them to engage communities, traditional institutions, youth groups, women organisations and other stakeholders across the twelve local government areas in Orlu Zone.
“We firmly believe that the people of Orlu Zone deserve purposeful, credible and visionary representation capable of advancing the interests of the zone with honour, distinction and responsibility,” the group said.
Orluzurumee also vowed to continue speaking out against any aspirant whose conduct or antecedents fall below what it described as acceptable moral and leadership standards expected of public office holders.
The organisation expressed optimism that political parties in Imo State would treat its appeal with seriousness and patriotism, insisting that credible representation and the preservation of the honour of Orlu Zone must take precedence over partisan interests.
