The Imo Youths Platform have demanded for the cancellation of both pro and anti government protests scheduled for July 3 in Owerri,  Imo State.

The Imo State Government had last week called on the sponsors of the anti government protest led by former Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Kelechi Nwagwu to carry on with demonstration.

In a release June 30, 2017, the Youth Group  said “ We are miffed that the state government and the governor do not understand the import of the protest, or if they did, they abandoned the issues and went on a wide good chase, pointing fingers at the PDP and comparing their usual notes and presenting issues of edifices as if that was all there is to governance. For the avoidance of doubt, the anti-government protesters had listed among other things, the issues of pension and sacked workers as their grievances. These administrative issues weigh far more than erecting edifices……”

It said  “It is well known fact to many Imolites that the former Speaker is working closely with and for some top APC member in the state, including a former Senator and gubernatorial Aspirant . Also, the governor’s invitation of the protesters to the government house to see the edifices he had erected rendered his response a laughing stock indeed, moreso, when the governor could also reel out to the protesters that he had changed the name of the government house from Douglas House to The People’s House, as achievement…..”

“Therefore, Imo Youths Platform is not persuaded that the protest, whether it is only the anti-government or both the anti and pro-government protests that would hold on July 3 would be peaceful. We are youths and we live in the state. Therefore, we call on the Police and the DSS to do the needful and direct that no protest holds on the said July 3 for any purpose in the state” the youth group demanded.

It would be recalled that the pro and anti government protesters had exchanged fierce altercations concerning the planned protests. Earlier, an aide of Governor Okorocha, Jeff Nwoha had vowed to mobilize 3 million youths as a counter to the planned protest organized by the former Speaker, Hon. Kelechi Nwagwu.
