Njoku was a governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in 2015. He has been speculated to join the race in 2019.

He gave fresh insights on his return to the governorship contest on his verified facebook wall where he thanked the leadership of Owerri Federal Constituency comprising of Owerri North, Owerri West and Owerri municipal “for coming out in their numbers in honour of the invitation by me for an interaction concerning my Governorship aspiration come 2019”

The post read in part “In the meeting well attended by both the traditional and religious class as well as the political leadership spoke in one voice re-iterating their support to the Restoration Agenda. For this level of support coming from one of the major block/federal constituencies in Owerri, it has become once again clearer that our people are set to put a square peg in the square hole”

“Just as the leadership stated; our best with both human face and mind must be supported to salvage Imo and take her to a level of sanity for the good of all”

“Thank you all and remember, in your thoughts about the new Imo of our collective dreams, Think Restoration, Think Prof. Jude E. Njoku” he wrote

If Prof Njoku joins the Imo governorship race, the number of governorship aspirants will increase to 34 across six political parties namely APC, PDP, APGA, MAJA Party, SDP  and Labour Party
