The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Imo State may resort to the unconventional practice of handpicking a new party chairman, as the party reposition to regain power in 2024 in the State from the All Progressive Congress, APC.

State Congresses to elect party executives in the party were put off due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic.

The ward and local government congresses had been a subject of controversy as some top PDP chieftains had lamented that the congresses were manipulated to favour a top politician in the State who wants a firm grip of the party structure ahead of the 2024 governorship election in the State.

However, there are now strong indications that the state congress may be a formality, as party leaders may “anoint” one of the contenders of the state chairmanship for the plum job

Sources said the “anointed Chairman”   is under wraps at the moment. This newspaper also observed that a former factional Chairman, Chief Chuks Ajaelu, alongside other contenders are in the picture of those who may be favoured for the post..

There was no independent confirmation of this claim, but sources said Chief Ajaelu may be considered ‘for demonstrating an undiluted passion to rejig the PDP in Imo State to enable it take on the ruling and clueless APC government’

In an interview recently in Owerri, Chief. Ajaelu, said “The PDP in Imo State needs to be repositioned to understand its role as a leading opposition party. ‘We need to work on that and make them believe the truth that there is hope for the party’ he stated
