The political landscape in Imo State may witness a potential shake-up as key opposition figures may consider aligning with the proposed All Democratic Alliance (ADA), spearheaded by former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar and ex-Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai.
Prominent opposition leaders in the state, including former Governor, Emeka Ihedioha and governorship hopeful, Mazi Chima Amadi, have been without a solid political platform.
The proposed ADA presents a unique opportunity for these politicians to consolidate their efforts under a single banner.
Former Governor of Imo State, Achike Udenwa had voiced strong reservations about the state of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo, particularly criticizing the prolonged tenure of the party’s National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.
Udenwa’s public discontent had led to speculations about his potential alignment with the new coalition.
Political analysts say that his stance against the PDP’s leadership is well-known and the proposed formation of ADA provides a chance for him to support a platform that aligns with his new found political ideals.
Udenwa, along with Atiku and some other political heavyweights in the country had consulted former President Muhammadu Buhari. over proposed coalition.
Ihedioha, who recently celebrated his 60th birthday in Abuja with glowing tributes from Atiku, may be closely linked with the ADA project.
Since resigning from the PDP, Ihedioha has maintained a low profile politically, but his connection to Atiku’s group suggests a possible resurgence in the near future.
“Former Vice President Atiku has always admired Ihedioha’s leadership style. The two share a deep bond that could translate into a significant political collaboration,” noted Ben Ihekire, a political analyst in Owerri.
It is unclear if former Minister, Emeka Nwajiuba, despite remaining in the All Progressives Congress (APC) may be part of the ADA movement. His tenure as a minister under former President Muhammadu Buhari has given him considerable political clout, making him a valuable asset to any coalition seeking influence in the Southeast zone.
In Abuja, Atiku and El-Rufai officially submitted a request to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the registration of the ADA. The coalition’s application included foundational documents such as its constitution, manifesto, and logo, symbolized by a maize plant representing abundance and resilience.
While the ADA movement gathers momentum nationally, its implications for Imo State are particularly significant.
Observers say if these opposition figures successfully regroup under ADA, it could present a formidable challenge to the APC and PDP in the 2027 Imo governorship elections.
