The Imo State Government has issued a fresh warning to those engaged in street trading, emphasizing that the practice remains illegal, hazardous, and detrimental to the state’s development.
In a press statement signed by Hon. Ebere Hilary Uche, Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, the government expressed disappointment over the continued defiance of directives against street trading despite repeated warnings and enforcement actions.
“Street trading endangers lives by causing accidents and obstructing traffic flow, defaces the environment by turning our streets into dumping grounds, and fosters insecurity, exposing both traders and buyers to theft and violence,” the statement read.
The government stressed that the illegal activity also poses a significant threat to economic growth, deterring investors and tarnishing the state’s image as a hub for commerce and development.
As part of its commitment to maintaining a clean, organized, and secure environment, the government announced that violators of the ban on street trading will face strict penalties, including arrest, confiscation of goods, and legal prosecution.
Residents were encouraged to utilize designated markets and shops for their trading activities, with the government underscoring the availability of safer and more regulated alternatives.
“This administration is determined to ensure that Imo State achieves its vision of becoming a safe, beautiful, and economically viable state,” the statement continued.
The government called on citizens to collaborate in upholding the directives, emphasizing that collective action is essential for fostering a healthier and more orderly society.
