Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa has called for a critical review of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) to enhance its competitiveness on the global stage.
Speaking in reaction to the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup, Musa highlighted the disparity between African clubs in the tournament and the state of domestic football in Nigeria.
“It’s a sober reflection when we compare the African clubs at the Club World Cup to our domestic league, the NPFL, Can we compete at this level? What are we not getting right?” Musa wrote on his facebook page.
Musa emphasized the need to reform the organization, structure, and funding of the NPFL.
“We need to set out new policies and drive the reforms. Our football is rich in talent and potential, from the grassroots to the elite level, but these alone aren’t enough in a modern football system,” he explained.
He also pointed out gaps in officiating standards, questioning Nigeria’s inability to produce referees for CAF and FIFA tournaments.
“Other African countries are producing referees for continental and international tournaments, but what do we have here?” Musa asked.
Calling for collective effort, the Super Eagles captain urged stakeholders to prioritize the development of Nigerian football.
“We must collectively decide to make our football work, ensuring that our clubs can compete at continental and world levels,” he added.
Musa concluded with a message of support for African clubs at the FIFA Club World Cup.
“Wishing all the African countries at the FIFA Club World Cup success,” he said.
