The Super Eagles of Nigeria revived their 2026 World Cup qualifying hopes after defeating Lesotho 2–1 on Friday in Polokwane, a result that came on a dramatic day of mixed fortunes across Group C.
South Africa were held to a goalless draw by Zimbabwe, while Benin Republic edged Rwanda 1–0 to stay top of the table.
However, the Confederation of African Football’s (CAF) regulation on results involving teams that have withdrawn — in this case, Eritrea — has reshaped the qualification race.
According to the rule, points and goals earned against Zimbabwe will be deducted from all teams if the adjustment is effected.
The new standings, after the deduction, leave Benin in first place with 14 points, Nigeria second on 12, and South Africa third with 11.
The recalibration means the race for the group’s sole automatic ticket to the 2026 World Cup is now wide open, with just one round of fixtures left to play.
CAF’s decision would see Nigeria lose two points from their previous matches against Zimbabwe, while both South Africa and Benin would lose four each. This adjustment has given the Super Eagles a narrow lifeline heading into their decisive clash against Benin on Tuesday in Uyo.
In the final round of games, Nigeria will face Benin Republic in what could be a make-or-break encounter, while South Africa will take on Rwanda.
A win for Nigeria could see them leapfrog Benin to the top — depending on the outcome of the other fixture.
With the new twist, Group C has become one of the most unpredictable pools in the African qualifiers. For the Super Eagles, the path to the World Cup is still steep — but for the first time in weeks, hope is flickering again.
