Germany have moved to appoint former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp as their new head coach after the departure of Julian Nagelsmann, whose tenure ended in the wake of the country’s disappointing exit from the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup. Reports indicate the German Football Association (DFB) has begun final talks with Klopp, whose Red Bull contract contains a clause allowing him to take charge of the national team.
Nagelsmann’s exit followed Germany’s shock elimination by Paraguay in the Round of 32, where the four-time world champions were held to a 1-1 draw before losing 4-3 on penalties. The defeat extended Germany’s poor run at recent World Cups after disappointing campaigns in 2018 and 2022, piling pressure on the 38-year-old coach to step aside.
Klopp, 59, is expected to spearhead Germany’s rebuilding process after spending the past year as Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer. Widely regarded as one of football’s elite managers, he transformed Liverpool FC into European and English champions, winning the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and ending the club’s 30-year wait for the Premier League title in 2020. He also guided Borussia Dortmund to two Bundesliga titles and a Champions League final after earlier earning promotion with 1. FSV Mainz 05.
The DFB believes Klopp’s experience, charismatic leadership and high-intensity style of football can restore confidence in a national side that has struggled to reclaim its dominance on the global stage. His appointment is also expected to usher in a new era as Germany begin preparations for upcoming international competitions.
Although an official announcement is still pending, multiple reports say Klopp has agreed in principle to succeed Nagelsmann, with only contractual formalities left before the appointment is confirmed.
