Confusion has taken over some aspirants for Okigwe senatorial seat, (Imo North Senatorial zone) particularly those jostling for the position on the platform of the All Progressive Congress, APC.
Since the fireworks started in the party at the national level via the suspension of the National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomole, and claims made by Chief Victor Giadom, as Chairman of the party, aspirants for Okigwe senate seat have now gone on “low key”, to watch events unfold in the party.
The National Working Committee, NWC, however announced former Governor of Oyo State and National Deputy Chairman (South), Abiola Ajimobi, as acting National Chairman. Ajimobi, is however indisposed to take over the affairs of the party due to ill health, thus the NWC appointed Prince Hilliard Eta, to act on Ajimobi’s behalf.
Giadom has however taken a step further by writing the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to recognize him as the APC National Chairman
This newspaper gathered that the crisis at the national level, with its trickling effects at the state chapters of the APC, particularly those with more than one factions some senatorial aspirants who have been campaigning for Okigwe senate seat have gone on low ebb, as they await the outcome of the raging crisis in the party.
A source close to one of the aspirants in the contests said the emerging scenario in the party is dangerous.
He said “We have to watch the scene carefully. It is a very intriguing development because whatever is the outcome of the political scuffle at the party at the national level may affect us. We have to wait, watch and see where all this is heading to
There are two strong factions in Imo APC, though the Caretaker Committee led by Marcellinus Nlemigbo, (Marcon), is strongly backed by the suspended Adams Oshiomole and Governor Hope Uzodinma.
Newspaper reports in Owerri say that another faction led by Daniel Nwafor, loyal to former Governor Rochas Okorocha, is backing the Giadom group. There is no independent verification of this claim.
Okigwe senate seat became vacant after the death of Senator Benjamin Uwajumuogu.
