As Governor Hope Uzodimma gets set to be sworn in for his second term as Imo State Governor on January 15, his commitment to handing over power to Owerri zone in 2027 has triggered a surge in political aspirations among influential figures within the zone.
With the Imo Charter of Equity in place , which advocates for a seamless power transfer among the state’s three geopolitical zones, key politicians within and beyond the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are discreetly positioning themselves for Uzodimma’s coveted seat in 2027.
Checks by INNONEWS, shows it’s evident that within the APC, some prominent political leaders in Owerri zone, aligned to the Governor, are subtly nurturing ambitions to succeed him.
As at the last count, seven of them from Owerri zone are very interested in the governorship seat.
One of them has already established a think tank group, strategizing a roadmap for his guber journey from now until early or mid-2026.
Investigations reveal that within the APC, five of such influential politicians from Owerri zone have quietly initiated their political maneuvers geared towards realizing their ambition.
A source notes that of the five, three lack “political experience”, having not held any elective public office, but boast remarkable success in their respective fields.
Possessing enormous financial resources and political influence within Owerri zone, they have discreetly begun their foray into the political landscape in the State to boost their ambition.
The source discloses, “One is already expanding his political influence beyond the zone, attending various political gatherings and functions, maintaining close ties with His Excellency.
“Another is a seasoned female politician with a national political standing..”
Two younger figures within the Governor’s camp also harbour guber ambitions.
One holds a significant position within the APC party structure and is a close ally of the Governor, while the other, being astute and articulate, keeps his aspirations discreet, and keenly observing the Governor’s signals as he prepares for his imminent swearing-in.
Most aspirants eyeing Uzodimma’s seat from the APC in Owerri zone believe that securing the Governor’s favour is pivotal, and the major key to the success of their aspiration.
They anticipate his endorsement, emphasizing the need to work to ensure the success of his second term in office, which they view as a crucial stepping stone toward realizing their political ambitions in 2027.
