Nigerian striker, Victor Boniface has returned to Germany as AC Milan drags its feet on finalising his transfer from Bayer Leverkusen, amid doubts about the forward’s fitness.
The 24-year-old, who has a history of right knee injuries in 2019 and 2020 and missed several games last season with muscle problems, underwent medical evaluations with Milan on Friday and Saturday.
The findings have forced the Rossoneri to take extra time before making a final call on the deal.
Milan sporting director Paolo Tare downplayed the delay, saying the club was acting cautiously.
“There were no extra medicals. We knew he had problems in the past. We are evaluating everything as planned with regard to his health and fitness. His qualities are undoubted. We are just trying to make the right decision,” he told reporters.
Reports from Gazzetta dello Sport suggest that Milan may walk away from the negotiations altogether, though Sky Sport Italia insists the Serie A giants could still push for Boniface alongside another centre-forward before the summer transfer window shuts.
The uncertainty comes at a critical time for Milan, who opened their Serie A campaign with a shock 2-1 home defeat to Cremonese.
Strengthening their attacking options has become urgent, with Boniface seen as a potential solution to the club’s lack of depth up front.
Boniface, who netted in Leverkusen’s 1-0 Champions League win over Milan last October, now waits anxiously in Germany for the Rossoneri’s verdict, with his injury record firmly under the microscope.
