Super Eagles’ World Cup Hopes Waning After 1-1 Draw with South Africa

by innonews

Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualification hopes suffered another setback on Tuesday as the Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa in Bloemfontein.

An own goal by captain William Troost-Ekong put the hosts ahead before Calvin Bassey’s strike restored parity.

The result leaves Nigeria stranded on 11 points, level with Benin Republic, who still have a game in hand.

South Africa remain firmly in control of Group C with 17 points and two matches left to play.

With the gap now six points, the Super Eagles’ path to qualification is narrowing fast, and the team faces a daunting task of turning the tide in their remaining fixtures.
