Football analyst, Wilfred Nwosu, has cautioned Super Eagles goalkeeper, Stanley Nwabali, to guard against complacency and overconfidence as Nigeria prepares for its next World Cup qualifier against Benin Republic.
Nwosu, reacting to Nigeria’s narrow 2–1 win over Lesotho in Polokwane, South Africa, said Nwabali appeared too casual in goal and failed to effectively clear his lines on several occasions, creating tension in Nigeria’s backline.
He noted that Nwabali’s recent displays suggest a growing sense of overconfidence that could prove costly if not addressed.
“He looks too relaxed lately, and that can be dangerous for a goalkeeper at the international level,” Nwosu said.
Citing Nwabali’s mix-up with defender Semi Ajayi in the closing minutes of the game, Nwosu warned that such errors could easily have gifted Lesotho an equalizer.
“If it had been a more determined side, Nigeria could have blown their chances of winning that game,” he added.
The analyst stressed that while Nwabali remains a talented shot-stopper, consistency and concentration are vital in maintaining his form, especially with crucial qualifiers ahead.
Nwosu advised the Chippa United goalkeeper to stay composed and focused when Nigeria hosts Benin Republic in Uyo on Tuesday, urging him to maintain calmness in goal and avoid costly mistakes.
“He has proven himself capable, but now is the time to stay grounded and focused. The next game is crucial, and Nigeria cannot afford any slip-ups,” Nwosu concluded.
