Hopes have been expressed by some Owerri indigenes that the ancestral Eke Ukwu Owerri market will be restored.

The market was demolished by the outgoing administration of Rochas Okorocha in 2017 which it said was in line with its urban renewal programme.

The demolition attracted outrage from within and outside the State.

However, expectations that the market will be rebuilt came to the fore at a programme organized by Owerri women (Udodiri Ndom Owerre) at the weekend in Owerri

The event which marked the women’s celebration of men of substance in Owerri became an avenue for some Owerri leaders to once again express their views on the ancestral market.

An aspirant for Owerri Municipal State Assembly, Hon Ifeanyichukwu Ukaegbu (aka Biafra) commended the women for voting for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP  and for casting their votes for Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, saying that the Eke Ukwu  Owerri market will return when Okorocha leaves office and after the swearing in of Ihedioha on May 29, 2019.

Another community leader and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Hon.Chief Leonard Osuji,Ebubeagu, said Owerri people suffered so much pain and set back during the Okorocha administration, expressing hope that better days are ahead.

President General of the Union, Mrs Stella Amadi, said the event was part of their contribution to giving deserved prizes and honour to deserving personalities in Owerri
