President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, has urged the people of Imo State to participate in the upcoming Governorship election on Saturday, November 11, 2023, dismissing calls for a sit-at-home protest.
Speaking at a world press conference in Owerri, Chief Iwuanyanwu emphasized the importance of voting for candidates based on individual preferences in a peaceful and non-contentious manner.
Chief Iwuanyanwu clarified that Ohaneze Ndigbo, as a socio-cultural organization, remains impartial and does not endorse any specific political candidate, affirming that its primary concern is a tranquil election process free from acrimony and discord.
Chief Iwuanyanwu condemned the recent call by Simon Ekpa, residing in Finland, urging people to boycott the election in Imo State.
He questioned the rationale behind such directives, highlighting that elections were successfully conducted earlier in the year in all other 35 states of the Federation.
Chief Iwuanyanwu called for unity among Imo Electorates, encouraging them to defy any calls for a sit-at-home protest and instead actively participate in the democratic process.
The Ohaneze Ndigbo leader urged Simon Ekpa to reconsider his directive, stressing that the people of Igboland desire peace and unity, not more bloodshed.
He recalled the painful memories of the civil war that claimed millions of lives and caused immeasurable loss of property, emphasizing the collective resolve to avoid any destructive violence in Igboland.
Chief Iwuanyanwu advocated for peaceful conflict resolution through round table conferences, emphasizing that disputes are best resolved through dialogue.
Reacting to rumours against Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, Chief Iwuanyanwu dismissed allegations suggesting his involvement in persuading President Tinubu not to release Nnamdi Kanu.
As President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo, he stated that the issue had been thoroughly investigated and found to be false and malicious.
Chief Iwuanyanwu praised Governor Uzodinma and other South East Governors for their tireless efforts in seeking the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu.
He disclosed that a united voice from the South East, including a meeting on July 10th involving State Governors, National Assembly members, Speakers of the Houses of Assembly, select leaders, and stakeholders, called for Nnamdi Kanu’s immediate release.
Chief Iwuanyanwu announced that Ohaneze Ndigbo would soon engage with the President on the issue, reaffirming their commitment to fostering peace and unity within the region.
