The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has told the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu and the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council, to own up that Christian Religious Knowledge, CRK was removed from the school curriculum.
CAN insisted that the Buhari administration removed the subject, asking the ministry to publish the full details of the controversial new Curriculum of Education if “ they have no hidden agenda”
Nigeria’s Education Minister, Adamu Adamu had faulted the position of CAN on the matter, saying it was a dummy sold to CAN by the social media by an individual who wanted to add more tension to the overcharged tense situation in the country. He had said that CRK had been made compulsory for all Christians and Islamic Religious Knowledge made compulsory for all Muslims.
But CAN President, Rev Dr, Samson Olasupo Ayokunle in a statement had recalled that the body had exposed the dangers inherent in the new curriculum of Education. He said the issue was raised in a meeting with the Acting President, Yemi Osibanjo.
The CAN President noted that in the curriculum, Islamic and Christian Religious Studies will no longer be studied in schools as subjects on their own but as themes in a civic education.
He said this undermines the sound moral values that these two subjects had imparted in the past to the children which made the Body to religiously and ethically co-exist without any tension.
