Werder Bremen defender, Felix Agu has been ruled out of Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following a long-term injury setback.

Agu sustained a syndesmosis ligament injury during Bremen’s 1-0 win over St. Pauli last month — an injury that initially appeared minor but later required surgical intervention.
The Super Eagles full-back was expected to recover within two months; however, his club has now confirmed that his return has been delayed until 2026.
Peter Niemeyer, Bremen’s head of professional football, told German outlet DeichStube that the 24-year-old will not feature again this year. “His return will definitely not take place until the new year,” Niemeyer said.
The latest development effectively rules Agu out of the continental tournament, a major blow for Nigeria as head coach Finidi George finalizes his defensive options ahead of the competition.
Agu, who represented Germany at youth level before switching allegiance to Nigeria, was widely seen as one of the new generation full-backs capable of adding depth to the Super Eagles’ defence.
