A major political controversy is unfolding in Ideato Nation, comprising Ideato North and Ideato South Local Government Areas of Imo State, following reports that a planned “thank-you visit” to Governor Hope Uzodimma has been hijacked by vested interests for ulterior political motives. The visit, ostensibly organized to appreciate the governor for the construction of the Orlu–Umuchima–Akokwa Road, is now being questioned by key stakeholders who insist it lacks legitimacy and broad-based representation.

According to multiple sources within the constituency, the delegation is being spearheaded by a wealthy businessman from Akokwa, who is accused of using the visit as a platform to promote preferred candidates for the All Progressives Congress (APC) tickets ahead of the next electoral cycle. Critics argue that what is being presented as a collective gesture of gratitude by Ideato people is, in reality, a carefully orchestrated political move designed to influence candidate selection for both the State House of Assembly and the House of Representatives.

Concerns deepened as it emerged that the Executive Chairmen of Ideato North and Ideato South LGAs, who traditionally should coordinate such high-level engagements, were reportedly sidelined in the planning process. Observers note that their exclusion raises serious questions about the authenticity of the delegation and whether it genuinely reflects the will of the people. The absence of these key local government leaders has been described by some as a deliberate attempt to undermine institutional structures within the constituency.

Further compounding the controversy is the exclusion of a wide spectrum of stakeholders, including traditional rulers, Presidents-General of town unions, political leaders, and appointees of the state government from the area. Instead, sources say that individuals with limited political standing were selectively assembled to create the appearance of a representative delegation. This development has fueled accusations that the visit is more about optics than genuine civic engagement.

Political leaders within Ideato are saying that the situation has deeper strategic implications, particularly concerning the House of Representatives seat currently occupied by Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, who also hails from Akokwa. They point out that in the 2023 general elections, the then APC candidate from the same community reportedly secured victory in only one polling unit, a performance widely regarded as weak. Critics now fear that re-presenting such a candidate could inadvertently strengthen the incumbent’s position and tilt the contest even further in his favour.

As the scheduled visit is set to hold amid rising tension, many stakeholders are calling for caution and circumspection in political processes affecting Ideato Nation. They warn that any attempt to sideline duly recognized leaders and institutions could deepen divisions within the constituency and undermine the credibility of the ruling party’s internal democratic processes. The unfolding situation continues to attract widespread attention across Imo State’s political landscape.
