Turkish champions Galatasaray are on the verge of completing the signing of former Chelsea midfielder Lesley Ugochukwu after reaching an agreement with Burnley for a season-long loan with an option to buy. The total value of the deal is reported to be just under €30 million, with the 22-year-old expected to complete his medical and sign his contract in the coming days.
The move will see Ugochukwu strengthen Galatasaray’s midfield ahead of the new campaign and reunite him with elite-level European football. The defensive midfielder, who began his professional career at Stade Rennais before moving to Chelsea in 2023, has also spent loan spells away from Stamford Bridge as he continued his development.
For Nigerians, the transfer carries added significance. Ugochukwu traces his family roots to Orji in Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State. Although born in Rennes, France, he remains eligible to represent Nigeria at senior international level because he has not featured in a competitive senior match for France.
The powerful midfielder has represented France at several youth levels, including the Under-21 side, and was also involved with the country’s Olympic team in preparations for the Paris Games. However, under FIFA eligibility rules, those appearances do not prevent him from switching allegiance to Nigeria should he decide to represent the Super Eagles in the future.
Should the transfer be completed, Ugochukwu will become a teammate of Victor Osimhen at Galatasaray, with the Super Eagles striker expected to spearhead the Turkish club’s attack. The prospect of playing alongside one of Nigeria’s biggest football stars could further fuel calls for Ugochukwu to consider committing his international future to the Super Eagles.
Standing at 1.90 metres, Ugochukwu is widely regarded as a commanding defensive midfielder noted for his physicality, composure in possession and ball-winning ability. At just 22, the move to Galatasaray is seen as another important step in his career, while Nigerian football fans will be watching closely in the hope that the Imo State-born talent eventually chooses to wear the green and white jersey at senior level.
