The return of Super Eagles first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali to South African club Chippa United has continued to attract criticism, with football analysts describing the move as shocking, disappointing and a major setback for a player whose performances for Nigeria had raised expectations of a transfer to a bigger club.
Chippa United recently announced the return of the Nigerian international, months after both parties mutually agreed to part ways. The development has surprised many football followers, especially after Nwabali’s outstanding performances for the Super Eagles at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and in subsequent international matches, where he established himself as Nigeria’s undisputed first-choice goalkeeper.
Speaking with INNONEWS, football analyst Sam Uche said Nwabali had failed to capitalize on the biggest opportunity of his career, blaming the goalkeeper’s management team for what he described as poor career planning. “It is shocking and disappointing. After everything Nwabali achieved with the Super Eagles, returning to Chippa United should not have been an option. I honestly think he has a bad agent. A player of his quality should have secured a move to a stronger league or a bigger club. His representatives failed him,” Uche said.
Another football analyst, Nnorom Emeh, shared similar sentiments, insisting that the goalkeeper had devalued himself by returning to the same club he left. “Nwabali has devalued himself. This is not the progression Nigerians expected after his superlative performances for the Super Eagles. He proved his quality on the biggest stage in Africa, yet he is back where he started. That is difficult to understand,” Emeh told INNONEWS.
Emeh further argued that the inability to secure a move abroad despite Nwabali’s impressive international profile raises serious questions about those managing the goalkeeper’s career. “A player who performed exceptionally at the Africa Cup of Nations and has remained Nigeria’s number one should not struggle to get a better club. His agent has serious questions to answer because something clearly went wrong,” he added.
Nwabali’s commanding displays at the Africa Cup of Nations won him admiration across the continent and reportedly attracted interest from clubs in Europe, the Middle East and South Africa. However, none of the reported moves materialised before his return to Chippa United, a development that has left many Nigerian football observers disappointed.
Despite the criticism, the goalkeeper is expected to resume his career with Chippa United, where he will seek regular playing time while hoping to retain his place as the Super Eagles’ first-choice goalkeeper ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming international fixtures.
