The political balance in the Abia State House of Assembly has shifted after Hon. Anderson Akaliro, representing Umuahia North constituency, announced his resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC). Akaliro, who was the only APC legislator in the Assembly, declared he would now work in support of Governor Alex Otti’s administration.
His decision was conveyed in a resignation letter addressed to the APC chairman in Umuahia North Local Government Area.
The lawmaker said his exit was informed by what he described as deep-rooted internal crises, persistent factional disputes, and the absence of cohesive leadership within the APC.
Akaliro lamented that he had been sidelined and excluded from party activities, alleging that he was not invited to meetings or official engagements organized by the APC leadership in the state.
According to him, the situation left him politically isolated and unable to effectively represent his constituents under the party’s platform.
The Umuahia North representative further criticized the APC in Abia for what he termed a culture of “endless suspension and counter-suspension,” which, he said, had weakened the party’s credibility and capacity to function as a united political force.
“I cannot continue in a political party where internal strife has become the norm,” he wrote, stressing that the divisions had made it impossible to pursue meaningful political engagement.
Declaring his new political stance, Akaliro pledged to align with Governor Alex Otti’s administration, which he described as “visionary and development-oriented,” adding that his priority moving forward would be to support policies that drive progress for Abia State.
